Honduras Fact Sheet
Honduras is a country of about 7.5 million people. Catholicism dominates the religious spectrum, making up about 80% of the country but only 20% of Catholics are active in the church. Protestants and Evangelicals have been growing recently. About 50% of the country is under the age of 19. Honduras is a poor nation, recently devastated by hurricane Mitch in 1998. They lost 70% of their crops that year and 60% of their infrastructure. The president then said that hurricane Mitch set the country back 50 years. Corruption has been rife in Honduras; it has been proved that children are kidnapped and then put up for adoption, which is a million dollar industry in Honduras. The unemployment rate is about 40% and the average income is 2.3% of the average American income. Most their country's GNP is made up of public debt. Drug trafficking and streets gangs are a problem. Pray for Honduras. The Catholic church is struggling because of limited funds and personnel (over 80% of their personnel are foreign). The protestant church leaders are in need of training; most of their Bible Colleges and school are also struggling. God cares deeply for these people. Let us pray that He will continue to use us to meet needs and preach the gospel in Honduras.
